This catalog is a record of the work of the Women's Auxiliary Executive Committee under the guiding hand of Herbert Reque, to locate the best examples of Norwegian American material culture. Many people who loaned treasured family objects and heirlooms lived in Minnesota and Wisconsin, but the WAEC successfully coordinated and cared for items from Norwegian Americans in other states, including Montana, New Jersey, New York, and Iowa. Some of the exhibit labels recorded evidence of Norwegian women's use of heirlooms as records of family history, such as the chest that had been handed down from eldest daughter to eldest daughter in the Ottesen family since the mid-1600s. The embroidered luncheon cloths, ethnic costumes, coverlets, silver cups, spinning wheels, musical instruments, tapestries, and handmade lace at this exhibit doubtless reminded visitors to the centennial of family stories and the uniquely Norwegian culture that had produced these objects.
